They open at nine and there is already a queue at ten to. Nobody in it wants to be there, and everybody is polite.

Sorting donations is ninety percent of it. The photographs happen on the day the fridge arrives, not on the fifty days before.

Warm socks, a phone charger, tinned food with a ring pull. The ring pull matters more than people think — not everyone has a tin opener.

I arrived expecting to feel useful. What I actually felt was in the way — and that is worth saying out loud.

Predictable beats large. A charity can plan around an hour every Thursday; it cannot plan around a heroic weekend.

Big bags of unsorted things cost a small charity storage, sorting and often disposal. Ask them what they need first.
